Duration of results of Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL)

The results of a treatment with Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL) can vary based on the individual’s skin type, the specific concern being treated, and the number of sessions undergone. Generally:

  • For Hair Removal: IPL treatments can reduce hair growth significantly. After a series of recommended sessions (usually 6-8), many individuals experience a reduction in hair growth for several months to years. However, maintenance treatments might be required once or twice a year to keep the skin smooth.
  • For Skin Rejuvenation: The effects of IPL on sunspots, redness, and broken capillaries can last for up to a year or longer. However, since the skin continues to age and get exposed to the sun, maintenance treatments are often recommended every 6-12 months.
  • For Acne: The results can last for several months, but regular maintenance treatments might be needed to keep acne at bay.
  • For Vascular and Pigmented Lesions: Once the treated sites heal, those specific lesions usually do not return. However, new lesions may develop over time, necessitating further treatments.

Downtime

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL) is known for its minimal downtime, making it a popular choice for individuals seeking effective treatments without significant disruptions to their daily routines.

  1. Immediate Aftermath (First 24 Hours)
    • Redness: It’s common for the treated area to appear red, similar to a mild sunburn. This redness typically subsides within a few hours to a day.
    • Warm Sensation: The skin may feel warm to the touch immediately after the procedure.
  2. Following Days (24-72 Hours)
    • Darkening of Pigmented Lesions: Sunspots or freckles may darken after the treatment. This is a desired effect, indicating that the pigment is being brought to the surface. These darkened areas will flake off over the next week, revealing clearer skin underneath.
    • Potential Swelling: Some individuals may experience mild swelling, especially around the eyes. This swelling usually diminishes within 24 to 48 hours.
